CHAPTER 10

When Rita came back into my office, I was nearly in a fit. Tears were streaming down my cheeks. I was laughing so hard that my shoulders were shaking but no sound was coming out. Rita looked worried. Reasonably so.

“You okay, honey?”

I sucked in some air and held it. “Yes,” I said, a few more giggles leaking out. “I just looked at my face. How many people can say that they got decked by a ninety-pound man on their first day at the office?” And then I was reduced to laughing again, tears running down my face.

Rita chuckled. “I’m guessing not many.”

I shook my head at her. “This is one for the books, Rita!”

She came back by my side and put the ice pack back to my face. Mags showed up with a Coke with a straw in it. Who is thoughtful enough to put a straw in a soda can to make it easier for someone to drink? These two ladies may just make this place bearable.

Mags held the can out to me and I sucked on the straw—not like I was going to let that little gem go to waste. Her and Rita exchanged glances, probably wondering if I was really laughing or simply on the verge of hysterics.

“Thank you,” I said, after a long drink. “Don’t worry, ladies. I’m not losing it. Just getting a little perspective. And I’ve decided this is pretty funny shit.”

They both smiled down at me. Mags hopped up onto my desk and tugged down her micromini so that it wasn’t (totally) indecent and crossed her long legs and looked content.

“I better get back to the front desk,” Rita said, as though just remembering that she was the sole welcoming committee for the lobby.

“Thank you, Rita. Really. So much,” I said.

She smiled at me and scurried out of the room.

“So,” Mags said, swinging her legs back and forth over the edge of my desk. “I need the play-by-play. How exactly does an attorney get punched on her first day, by her first client?”

I looked at her with my good eye, glaring just enough to make her laugh. Her brown hair was wavy and slightly ratted to make it bigger. She was wearing light blue eye shadow and pink lip gloss. And somehow it fit her. She was actually pulling it off.

I handed her my phone. “Take a picture for me, ’cause no one is going to believe this without photographic evidence.”

She grinned and held my phone out in front of me. “Smile. Okay, one more. There you go,” she said, handing my phone back to me.

I picked the more dramatic of the two pix and texted it to Logek saying, Having a super first day! Only got punched once!:)

I should send it to Adam, too. No. It would seem like a desperate cry for attention. And I am definitely not a desperate-cry-for-attentioner. Definitely.

I finished the soda and felt more like myself. “Okay, Mags. I’m going to take Tony up on the offer to leave early and go home.
